12:08 Rx – Starting to feel it in my legs…Ouch. Great WOD!
Nutrition question here:
A weirdo that goes to my gym (we all know the type, loves to comment on stuff but never really trains hard) was telling me that bcaa was a very useful suplement (BCAA is branch chain amino acid).
He also said that an old-fashioned replacement was to use backing soda, maybe a teaspoon or 2 mixed with water before a workout?
I googled it, but couldn’t find anything. I suppose it makes sense as baking soda is used as an ant-acid so maybe it would make your whole body less acidic?
Anyway, thoughts on using baking soda as a substitute for bcaas?
Nick
PS: I don’t know where I would find baking soda here in Japan anyway, but if it’s legit I’ll have my mom send me some.
16.04 Rx
Great Job, Brock.. You beat Tyler!

@Nick, I don’t know anything about BCAA’s but found this link in searching. Seems to show you can get the BCAA’s plus other stuff by eating cottage cheese.

The baking soda thing seems separate and more based on the acidity level, and countering the effects of lactic acid. Interesting read here:

No idea about the validity of these links, but they seemed interesting.

225lbs
Green Band
That workout kicked my a*s!!! Slept like a baby.
Nick – I think this baking soda stuff is a little nutty sounding. I don’t remember all THAT much from high school chemistry, but baking soda is a salt and does not have any branched carbon links; BCAAs contain nitrogen and specific bends in the carbon bonds with oxygen and hydrogen. I have a hard time believing that adding a salt to water would somehow cause a chemical reaction strong enough to create nitrogen and bend carbon bonds…
Then again, I’m no expert. But it seems like other people interested in protein synthesis would have stumbled on this VERY simple replacement trick and at least written something about it online. The fact that you or nor I can find anything about it does not bode well for the method.
12:28 – 185lbs, I too slept like a baby after this WOD.
Nick,
It looks like the BCAA and Baking Soda are different things. BCAA supplements seem beneficial, but from this article, it seems like cottage cheese is better.

And here’s an interesting read on sodium bicarbonate, baking soda. Seems like it helps limit the effects of lactic acid.

No idea on the validity of these links, just found ‘em on google.
Sorry for the double post, it wasn’t showing up before. Weird.
Thanks Steph. Sounded too good to be true.
