And what now?

CrossFit Minneapolis

With our recent move across the river, there remains one important question: what should become of our beloved website? I’ve considered a number of different options, though none seem to represent the perfect solution, and I am afraid that I may be running out of ideas. So, I am posing this question to you, yes you, as to how we should go about maintaining www.crossfitminneapolis.com. I’ve considered narrowing the scope of this question, but was concerned that in doing so I might be stunting creativity. All answers will be considered – within reason of course – and I really am open to a number of potential options. What do you people out there in cyber space, some directly associated with this gym, others not, want to see happen here? Health and wellness blog? Open forum for CrossFitters worldwide? Please, post thoughts and ideas to “comments”.

    CrossFit Porn?

  2. Deborah says:

Wow.. really Matt? Anyway you have to keep it for sure.. I kind of like the way this site is set up for viewing workouts better.. maybe keep portion of the sit for the WOD and the other for some sort of wellness blog geard towards crossfitters???

  3. Jake "Georgia" Rubash says:

Keep it up as an open blog for people to post WOD’s, videos, diet help and life as a crossfitter. Maybe make it possible for people to keep personalized logs on the site, as well as your own. I’d love a place for a log.

  4. Greg says:

Tough question Tyler. I kind of agree with Deb that I liked the layout here a little better the CF-SP (sorry Mike), but some of that might just be getting used to the site. A site to do logs would require a bit of change to really organize it as anything but comments to wods. And then you’d be competing with stuff like Fitday.com and beyondthewhiteboard.com which both offer workout and food journaling. Going the health and wellness route would also require a bit of effort, because you’d either have to A) work on your own articles with research, which is time consuming, or B) basically link to other popular website’s articles. I’ve envisioned something more along the lines of option B, but then I question the value, I mean how many people are reading the things directly from the other sites. I don’t know. Maybe it would be worth a shot to offer summarized articles for the people who don’t read stuff like MarksDailyApple daily or you could pose it as a spot to ask questions and the community could answer the questions, or the blog writer could answer the question with a post. Stuff like what shoes are best for Crossfitting? Running shoes? Oly shoes? Chucks? Multiple? Crazy freaky webbed toes shoes? I don’t know. Just don’t close it down.

Also, anybody else interested in an XL or XXL shirt? I’ve got a call into Rebel Ink to see if they still have the screens.

  6. Freddy says:

    Quinner,

I like having the workouts listed on the website and would still really appreciate it, seeing as I am only in Minneapolis for only 2 months or so out of the year. I have continued to do CrossFit on my own and when I was gone playing hockey this year as well. I check the site at least every other day, if not once a day, trying to do most of the workouts listed. I also like the idea of just having additional CrossFit information on the website as well, but hope that the workouts will still be listed, be it the ones done at CF-SP or just ones that you like or created on your own.

    That’s my 2 cents worth.

dude, t-shirt: could they get a large? if not, i guess i could do an xl, i am huge after all.
as far as the website is concerned, i like the idea of a gym calendar. i call august!
alright, i know that tyler is shaking his head and grimacing right now. seriously, i like the idea of posting questions about shoes, diet, etc. but also a forum where we ourselves could offer suggestions or incorporate ideas of workouts that we’ve seen or would like to try. constant variance is the main idea. someone grab the baton…

  8. Stephanie says:

I like Greg’s idea of posing a question every so often and letting people respond to it in a forum-like way. It’s sort of minor, but maybe you could also post the same WOD that’s posted on CF SP, or at least link to their site, so people who are used to following this site for workouts can start following the SP site. I also like all the videos you often post, keep that up fo’ sho. Maybe post some recipes and food porn? I can help in that department :)

  9. Kalen says:

I second Stephanie and Greg. I like the Q & A forum / recipes / duplicate WOD post with videos ideas. Can’t wait to get back in the game over at St. Paul – my bum knee is getting better. Hope to see you all next week.

  10. Ian says:

I wrote a response last night…but maybe I feel asleep before hitting send. LOL

#1 – I like the idea of continuing WOD discussion CFMSP. It’s good to see and get that feedback.

#2 – I also like the idea of expanding the conversation to include areas that affect our CF performance. Discussions on training, diet, form, the mental game, etc.

#3 – It could also be cool to throw out challanges. A long(!) time ago, Tyler told everyone to set 3 goals. We never really followed up with that but I thought that was an excellent idea. Now whether it is setting an individual goal and throwing it out there and being held accountable. Or if there is a group challange thrown out … I think both of those could be really positive for our little community.

    ps. I hate 6am. LOL

It’s been awhile, but glad to see things have been really taking off! As for the website goes, I don’t have any earth shattering ideas, but I really think you have one of the best websites of any of the Crossfit sites I’ve seen, so I’d try and keep it up and running in some way. It gives the main site a run for it’s money! The layout is great and it’s not overly cluttered like a lot of the other Crossfit websites.

    Peace,
    Coz

  12. T. Quinn says:

Freddy and Cozzy, great to hear from you guys – glad to know you’re still checking us out.

Great ideas, everybody. You’ve really got me thinking and it’s looking more and more like this site will become a combonation of many of the different concepts discussed in your comments. Challenges, WODS, articles, etc. I’m going to leave this post up for a couple more days to see who else puts in their $.02 worth, and then, we’ll go forth!

    tq out.

  13. Matt says:

Sorry for the Joke Deb… Just trying to “think outside the box”. Maybe make Quinn a little dough along the way.

Seriously though I like the ideas Ian had.. I will still continue to lurk on the site for information.

  14. Matt M says:

I agree with Matt N?, Deb, and Ian. Keep it up. I love this site and look to it often for ideas and like to check in on my CF Minneapolis crew. Things are going great back in Sydney. But I definitely miss our classes in MSP. July will be around before you know it and I can join you all for a few classes from June 30-July 11th.

    Cheers,
    Matt M

I’m a huge fan of the layout and feel of this site, but to be honest I don’t think it holds much value without having an associated gym. I know the plan is to reopen CrossFit Mpls at some point, and at that time you could use this site again on a regular basis. But until that day I don’t think it’s helping your business. I would suggest having it redirect to CrossFit St. Paul’s site. That way you’ll capitalize on search engine traffic. It would be a little confusing to have http://www.crossfitminneapolis.com redirect to St. Paul, but is it less confusing than coming to this site and not know what’s going on, or seeing “And what now?” as the lead post?

St. Paul’s site does a good job at communicating the WOD, and if this site isn’t updated at least as often as their site (every day) then it doesn’t pay for me to come here first. Believe me, I do love the style of this site, but from a usability perspective it isn’t doing anything better than St. Paul’s site.

Save your energy and just have this redirect to St. Paul. You can write articles or do whatever through that channel. When you re-open CrossFit Mpls, I’ll be the first to switch the bookmark in my browser.

A belated good bye to you all!
I’m going back to school for masters and am not going to have the time and fundage to continue.
Good Luck to all of you in your efforts.

My two cents on the website: It’s nice to check back on old times and loads, not to mention the pics. I like the idea of this being a challenge site where a community of folks posts their times and loads to different challenges. For folks that stumble upon this site looking for a place to work out there could be link back to CrossfitStPaul on the front page.

    Peace!
    Dick

  17. Brock says:

    All,

I agree with Andy on this one. It’s beneficial to keep traffic going to where you’re business is. It’s somewhat confusing to have a site associated with no location. Having a link to SPCF on the main page would be helpful. Just make sure you’re keeping it clear, so newbies don’t get confused!

As far as the ideas for the site staying up… I like them all. Discussions, recipes, goals, etc… It’s nice to have dialog with everyone. SPCF’s site seems a little less inviting to speak your mind (Maybe you and Mike can work on that and make it perfect for all?)

    Good luck Dick!
Glad things are going well Matt M!

    Brock
